The complete guide to family diving vacations

– Safe diving with children, beginners, and families

Imagine a vacation where you not only share the sun and beach, but also a whole new world beneath the sea. Where the children snorkel side by side with colorful fish, and where you as a family experience something that feels both grand, peaceful, and a little magical. That is exactly what a family diving vacation can offer.

For many families, the idea starts with a question: "Is it even possible to dive with children?"
The answer is yes—when done correctly. That's why we've gathered all our experience in this guide to family diving vacations, where we also dive into topics such as when children can get their diving certification, trial dives for children, and how to plan a family diving vacation that suits both children and adults.

But a family diving vacation is about much more than just the dives themselves. It's about shared experiences that create unity and give the family something to bond over—both during the vacation and long after you've returned home. When you learn something new together, overcome small challenges, and share experiences that feel different from everyday life, a special bond is formed. A shared point of reference that cannot be bought or packed away in a drawer.

Diving has a unique ability to bring people together. Underwater, there are no screens, no distractions, and no roles. Here, you are simply together—attentive, calm, and present in the moment. Children experience mastery and courage, parents experience pride, and the whole family shares the feeling of having done something that was a little outside their comfort zone – but in a safe way.

At the same time, a family diving vacation opens the door to a community that extends far beyond your own family. Diving is an international language where hand signals, smiles, and curiosity transcend culture, age, and nationality. At diving centers and on boats, you will meet families, couples, and adventurous souls from all over the world—all connected by the same fascination with life under the sea.

For children, it can be their first encounter with a global community, where they discover that the world is bigger than Denmark – and at the same time more connected than they thought. For adults, it is often a reminder of how meaningful it is to share experiences with others, regardless of where you come from.

What is a family diving vacation?

A family diving vacation is not one specific way to spend your vacation. It is a framework where the whole family can experience the sea together – without everyone having to do the same thing. It is precisely this flexibility that makes diving an ideal family activity.

A family diving vacation offers something for everyone, regardless of skill level or pace. Some may begin with snorkeling close to the shore. Others may try diving for the first time in shallow water with an instructor by their side. And perhaps one or two may choose to obtain a diving certification along the way, while the rest enjoy the experience from the surface. Everyone participates, just in their own way.

For many families, trial dives are the natural first step. Here, both children and adults have the opportunity to experience weightlessness and underwater life in a safe environment, without having to commit to an entire course. This provides peace of mind and a good sense of whether diving is something you want to pursue further. That is why many people choose to start with a trial dive for children and beginners before possibly taking the next step.

A family diving vacation can also be the start of a shared interest that extends far beyond the vacation itself. Sharing experiences underwater sparks conversations, curiosity, and a desire to learn more together. Children have something to talk about when they get home, and parents discover how a shared activity can create new forms of closeness within the family.

At the same time, diving opens the door to an international community. At diving centers and on boats, you will meet families, couples, and adventurous people from all over the world—all connected by the same fascination with life beneath the sea. Here, it doesn't matter what language you speak or where you come from. A hand signal, a smile, and a shared experience underwater are often enough.

This is also why many families choose destinations that offer a particularly safe and predictable environment. Places such as Gozo in Malta, with short travel times and easily accessible coastal diving, or Bali, where exotic adventure is combined with peaceful conditions and extensive experience with families, are obvious choices when you want to combine experiences, safety, and flexibility in one place.

In short, a family diving vacation is not about being a "diver" or not. It's about finding a shared way to experience the world—where both children and adults can grow, learn, and create memories together, at a pace that feels right for you.

Is diving safe for children?

This is often the first—and most important—question parents ask when the topic of diving with children comes up. And it's a good question. Because safety must always come before adventure.

The short answer is: Yes, diving can be safe for children – when it is done on the children's terms and in the right setting.

Family-friendly diving differs significantly from the diving that many adults might imagine. Here, we are talking about shallow water, small groups, plenty of time, and instructors who are trained to work with children. Nothing is rushed, and there is always the option to stop, take a break, or take a step back if something does not feel right.

For children, diving never starts with deep dives or long courses. The first experiences typically take place in very shallow water, where the child can stand up, and where the focus is on safety, play, and familiarity with the equipment. This can be through programs such as trial dives for children or special children's courses, where the pace is adapted to age and maturity.

In addition, it is important to emphasize that children should never be pressured into anything. Many families choose to start with snorkeling so that children can slowly get used to the ocean and life below the surface. Others start with a single introductory dive and see how it feels. It is completely normal—and perfectly okay—to take it in stages.

When children experience diving in a safe environment, something special often happens. They gain a sense of mastery and courage because they realize that they can do more than they thought. At the same time, they learn to listen to their gut feeling—that it is always okay to speak up. This is an important lesson, both underwater and in life in general.

Safety is therefore not just about equipment and rules, but also about frameworks, experience, and respect for the child's pace. That is why we also elaborate on questions such as when children can obtain a diving certificate and what types of diving make the most sense at different ages.

When can children start diving?

When talking about diving with children, age is often the first thing that comes into play. But in reality, it is just as much about maturity, confidence, and desire as it is about a specific number on their passport. Children develop differently, so there is no one right age, but rather several natural stages.

For many children, the journey begins with snorkeling. Even at an early age, children can experience life below the surface with a mask and snorkel, as long as they feel safe in the water. Snorkeling is a playful and non-committal way to get used to the sea – and often the first step towards more.

From around the age of 8, children can try actual diving programs that have been specially developed for them. These take place in very shallow water and under the close supervision of an instructor. The focus is not on technique or performance, but on making the experience fun, safe, and manageable. For many children, this is where their fascination with diving really begins, and where they have their first experience of breathing underwater.

As children get older – typically around 10–12 years old – more opportunities open up. Some may take their first steps toward obtaining a diving certificate, while others may continue to prefer trial dives or snorkeling. The most important thing is that the child wants to do it and that the pace suits their needs. Diving should never feel like a chore, but rather something you are curious about.

It is also important to remember that children do not need to dive to be part of a family diving vacation. Some children love snorkeling and water games, while others are not ready to dive until later. Both are equally valid ways to participate, and both create memories and experiences that bind the family together.

Trial dive or certification – what makes the most sense for families?

When families consider diving on vacation, a new question almost always arises:
"Should we just try it—or should we get a real certificate?"

There is no one right answer. It depends on the composition of your family, the age of your children, your curiosity, and, not least, the time you have available on vacation. That is precisely why it is important to view trial dives and certification as two different paths into the world of diving—not as either/or.

For many families, trial dives are the most natural place to start. Here, both children and adults have the opportunity to experience what it feels like to be underwater without committing to a longer course. The pace is slow, the depth is shallow, and the focus is on safety and experience rather than technique. A trial dive is particularly suitable if it is your first encounter with diving, or if you want to see whether it is something you would like to pursue further.

Many families choose a middle ground. One or two take the certification course, while the rest snorkel or take trial dives. That way, everyone can be part of the same vacation without having to do the same thing. It is precisely this flexibility that makes a family diving vacation so special: no one is left behind, and everyone gets experiences at their own level.

It is also worth remembering that a trial dive is not a "minor" experience. For many, taking their first breath underwater is one of the most memorable moments of their vacation—regardless of whether it leads to a certification or not. Diving does not have to be a goal in itself. It can simply be an experience you share and take home with you as a shared memory.

What characterizes the best destinations for family diving vacations?

When choosing a destination for a family diving vacation, there is much more to consider than just good diving spots. Even though the underwater experiences will fill your memories, it is rare that you spend your entire vacation there.

On a family diving vacation, you don't dive every day—and certainly not all day long. There also needs to be time to breathe, enjoy each other's company, and let the vacation sink in. That's why the best destinations are those where diving, relaxation, and experiences on land go hand in hand.

A good family diving destination is a place where the pace is relaxed and the surroundings invite you to spend time together. It could be a place where you stay in a cozy villa or a small resort, where the children can play by the pool while the adults enjoy a cup of coffee in the shade. Where the days are not tightly planned, but allow room for spontaneous experiences and shared moments.

At the same time, the surroundings on land mean more than one often thinks. Culture, history, and local traditions help to give your vacation depth and variety. These may be small towns with narrow streets, local markets, old buildings, or historical sites that tell you something about the area and the people who live there. For children, it may be their first encounter with a different culture—and for adults, an opportunity to experience the world at a slower pace.

Meeting people is a big part of the experience. The best destinations are often those where hospitality and friendliness are a natural part of everyday life. Where you are greeted with smiles, patience, and curiosity—both at the dive center, at the restaurant, and when meeting local families. This creates a sense of security, especially when traveling with children, and makes you feel welcome.

When diving is combined with relaxed surroundings, beautiful nature, culture, and friendly people, it creates the very special holiday atmosphere that many families are looking for. A holiday where adventure and tranquility are not mutually exclusive—but complement each other.

Gozo (Malta) – safe and relaxed family diving vacation close to Denmark

Gozo is an obvious choice for families who want a calm and manageable introduction to diving – without having to travel far. The island is small, green, and charming, and the pace is noticeably slower than many other Mediterranean destinations. Here, your vacation feels relaxed from day one.

One of the things that makes Gozo so special as a diving destination is the shape and size of the island. Regardless of wind and weather, there is almost always a calm and sheltered place to dive. If it is windy on one side of the island, you simply drive to the other side. This means that dives are rarely canceled and conditions are often stable and safe—a big advantage when traveling with children or starting to dive.

Diving in Gozo mostly takes place directly from the coast. This means short transport times, good visibility, and the opportunity to combine diving with snorkeling and beach life. For families, this means less stress and more time together—and for children, it means a safe start, where the sea slowly becomes a friend.

Beneath the surface lie some of the Mediterranean's most impressive underwater landscapes. Gozo is known for its dramatic rock formations, natural arches, caves, and grottos, which create an almost fairy-tale atmosphere underwater. Even in relatively shallow water, you experience depth, structure, and light that make every dive special.

The visibility around Gozo is often exceptional. On many days, you can see 30–40 meters, which provides a sense of calm and clarity—even for new divers and children. The clear water makes it easy to orient yourself and enjoy the experience at your own pace.

The wildlife offers plenty of experiences. Colorful fish, octopuses, moray eels, and seahorses hide among the rocks, and with a little luck, you can see stingrays gliding past on the sandy bottom. For children, spotting life under the water is a great experience, and for adults, it is precisely the variety and details that make Gozo relevant again and again.

But Gozo is much more than diving. The island is steeped in history and local culture, with small towns, old stone houses, churches, and winding streets where time seems to pass a little slower. It's easy to take breaks from the water and go exploring—to local markets, cozy cafés, or a walk along the coast overlooking the azure sea.

Meeting the locals is a big part of the experience. Gozo is known for its hospitality, and many families quickly find themselves greeted with smiles, patience, and genuine kindness—both in restaurants, shops, and diving centers. This creates a safe and relaxed atmosphere, which means a lot when traveling with children.

Gozo is particularly well suited to families who:

  • desire short travel time

  • want stable and calm diving conditions

  • appreciates culture, history, and local atmosphere

  • would like to combine diving with relaxation and mindfulness

It is a destination where diving becomes a natural part of the vacation—not the entire focus—and where the whole family can find their own rhythm.

Diving in Bali is known for its enormous variety. Even from the coast, you can experience colorful coral reefs and rich marine life, making Bali suitable for beginners and families. In many places, diving takes place directly from the beach, so logistics are simple and days can be planned at a leisurely pace – with room for both adventure and relaxation.

Visibility is generally very good, and the water is warm all year round, making for a pleasant experience – especially for children. The combination of calm dive sites, professional instruction, and warm temperatures creates a safe environment, even when the experiences feel big.

Which destination is best suited to your family?

When choosing a destination for a family diving vacation, it is rarely about what is "best" in an absolute sense. It is about what suits you best—your children, your experience, and your way of vacationing.

Some families dream of a quiet vacation with short travel times, where everything feels manageable and where diving can easily be combined with relaxation, swimming pools, and short excursions. It provides peace of mind to know that you can get there quickly and that your days can be planned without long journeys or major changes. For these families, destinations such as Gozo are an obvious choice.

There are also families who find themselves somewhere in between. Some family members want security and peace, while others dream of new horizons and greater experiences. That is precisely why flexibility is so important. On a family diving vacation, not everyone has to do the same thing, and the destination must be able to accommodate both adventure and relaxation.

Regardless of your choice, it is worth remembering that diving is only part of the vacation. The best destinations are those where you also enjoy yourself above water. Where there is time for slow mornings, cozy meals, small experiences on land, and meeting people who welcome you with smiles and hospitality. It is often in these moments that your vacation truly becomes a lasting memory.

When you start from this point, the destination becomes more than just a place on the map—it becomes the setting for a vacation that is tailored to your family.

How to plan the perfect family diving vacation

Choose accommodation with peace and flexibility

Accommodation plays a bigger role than people often think. On a family diving vacation, it is an advantage to stay somewhere where there is space to retreat and where the vacation does not feel hectic. Villas, apartments, or smaller resorts often offer more peace and quiet than large hotels—and make it easier to tailor the days to the family's rhythm.

When children have the opportunity to play, relax, and feel at home, the entire vacation becomes easier for everyone.

Start gently – and build up the experiences

For families who are new to diving, it makes sense to start gently. Snorkeling and trial dives are great ways to introduce children (and adults) to life underwater without any pressure. Afterwards, you can see if there is a desire for more – either on the same vacation or on a later trip.

The most important thing is that no one feels pressured. Diving should be enjoyable and safe, not a goal that must be achieved.

Remember that holidays are also what happens above the water

One of the things that makes a family diving vacation special is everything that happens between dives. Meals together. Talking about the day's experiences. Meeting local people. Short trips in the area, where children experience new cultures, smells, and atmospheres.

FAQ – Family diving vacation

A vacation that lingers

A family diving vacation is ultimately not about depths, equipment, or destinations on a map. It's about moments. About that first glimpse underwater. About the laughter afterwards. About the conversations that arise when you share something new—and a little brave—together.

These are the kinds of experiences that continue to resurface long after you have returned home. In your memories. In your photos. In the stories that are told again and again.
